An Innovative Step Towards Sustainable Waste Management

Innovative, through its operating company Municipal Waste Solutions (MWS), is at the forefront of reshaping waste management in Maine. Located in the Town of Hampden, our state-of-the-art waste processing facility is a testament to our commitment to supporting the solid waste hierarchy and landfill diversion objectives set by the state.

About Our Collaboration With the Municipal Review Committee (MRC)

MWS isn’t just another company; our public-private partnership with the MRC, a collective of 115 cities and towns in Maine, allows us to pool our resources to more effectively manage our customer communities’ solid waste challenges. Our shared mission is to collaboratively work towards reducing and reusing waste streams to provide for a cleaner, greener Maine. Our facility will serve as a blueprint for how communities, both domestically and internationally, can maximize landfill diversion and minimize their impact on the environment.

Facility Overview

  • Location: 92 Harold Bouchard Way, Hampden
  • Building Area: 144,000 sqft on a 15 acre parcel
  • Facilities: A comprehensive waste processing infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art material recovery system (MRF), public road access and essential utility interconnects.
  • History: The facility was constructed in 2018 and successfully processed waste for approximately one year before being forced to shut down in 2020 due to technical and commercial challenges.

A Sustainable Future

Innovative is gearing up to implement a significant retrofit of the Hampden facility to ensure consistent and cost-effective operations. Our goal is clear – divert as much waste from landfills as possible. We will extract recyclable commodities and transform waste paper, food, and other organic materials into renewable natural gas to achieve this. However, our ambitions don’t stop there. As technology evolves, so will our methods. We aim to continuously enhance our waste diversion techniques, ensuring Maine stays at the forefront of sustainability.

Operational Roadmap

  • 2024: The future begins as we begin construction activities at the Hampden facility.
  • 2025: We begin accepting community waste and continue to ramp our operations
  • 2026: Steady-state commercial operations are reached, with a goal of processing 180,000 tons/year of mixed waste.

Join us on this transformative journey, where together, we can sculpt a sustainable future for Maine, one recyclable at a time.
